Finding The Right Storage Facility

Keeping your belongings safe is very important. If you are moving into a new home, or you simply do not have enough space for all of your belongings it is important to keep everything you own in good condition. One of the best ways to do that is to store it in a storage facility. There are a lot of different storage facilities, and most of them are a great for long-term storage. You will want to ensure the facility is completely safe. Here are a few different things to inspect in a potential storage facility.

Theft Protection

Perhaps the most important thing that you can check is the security of the facility. The manager of the facility does not want a bad reputation for an unsecure storage facility; so most storage units are well protected. You will likely see tall fences with barbed wire, security gates, and often there will be security cameras through the entire facility. These are in the facility for extra protection. If you find a really secure storage facility you are well on your way to storing your belongings.

Weather Proof

When you are inspecting potential storage units you also need to inspect for any water damage. Outside storage units are very popular, and they can be fantastic, but they also need to be weather proof. You will want to look for any water stains on the ground and through the ceiling of the unit. Usually the water stains will show up on the ceiling as rust or oxidation of metal. Once again, most storage facilities are going to pride themselves in providing a great place for self-storage, so the space should be weatherproof.

Pest Control

If pests are not kept under control they can become a real problem anywhere. Taking the time to look for ants, termites, or rodents is going to pay off in the long run. When looking for rodents look for the fecal pellets, but also make sure that you look around the edges of the unit to se if there are any cracks or holes. You can ask the manager what they are doing to stay pest free.

Climate Control

If you are going to be storing electronics and other goods that are fragile, it may be a good idea to look into climate-controlled storage. These storage units are usually inside storage units that are kept at the same temperature at all times. This will keep the components in the electronics from freezing and thawing. The freeze thaw cycle can cause the components to expand and contract, which can break  them.
